The County of Los Angeles has recently seen an increase of invasive mosquitoes in the area. The Aedes mosquitoes, Aedes akbopictus, “Asian tiger mosquito” and the Aedes aegypti, or “yellow fever” mosquitoes currently pose a big threat to Greater Los Angeles Communities.
These mosquitoes are active during the day, are smaller than a quarter, and have white stripes on their legs. They have the potential of transmitting diseases such as Zika, yellow fever, dengue fever, and chikungunya.
Below are steps you could take today to protect your families and neighborhoods from Aedes mosquitoes:
Use insect repellent if you are going to spend time outdoors.
Keep your yard clean and dry. Get rid of all containers that can hold water around your home: tires, pots, saucers, buckets of water, kids’ toys, rain barrels, etc.
Mosquitoes can lay hundreds of eggs in dormant water. Within one week, these eggs develop into adult mosquitoes.
